Spirits Of The Witchwood

In the court of a magician In a tower on a hill Wrought of dark stone mined in cygnus With a fable to fulfil This tower loomed above all others Casting shadows far and wide And with the spirits of the witchwood We’re fighting all the falsehood The elders left behind Then a horseman came to see us Underneath a crimson sun In delivering his portent The unthinkable was done The parchment, falling slowly to the ground Caused a panic like no other And with the spirits of the witchwood We’re fighting all the falsehood The elders left behind We’re at one with the witchwood Fighting the falsehood Transmuting spells By the day Pitch black darkness surrounds us It dares to confound us Placing a wedge In the way Blue sky memories are keeping Slowly creeping doubts well away We’re at one with the witchwood Our hope for the future Is savouring the fruit of golden bows From trees we’ve known since the dawn of time And can’t let down It’s so profound Visions of a never ending stream of solemn days Breathing for the rest of time This is all we know and care to enshrine

Here I stand in grief before you As the rain strikes fiercely down I am homeless, cold and desperate And the fatal stars still frown In the dark of night There is a glow beyond the river Where the embers dance and burn Blood red skies As we fall To the force controlling us Keep crusading through the chasmed ways Scale the mountains through the solar haze Rest in clover at the end of days Bear the trial Of the black blood swollen mire At the funeral of the forest There is a glow beyond the river Where the embers dance and burn Come to me Oh distant dream of victory Absolve me of this misery Antares bring the light For the gods are waiting Come to me Oh moon white nymphs of mystery Avail me of your witchery To the purpose of the fight At the funeral of the forest

Sanctus Imperium Idoneous Rex Regum Sanctus Imperium Idoneous Ex Nihilo Sanctus Sanctus Imperium Idoneous Rex Regum Night falls gently Like a mantle Wrapping around the land And sleep falls slowly Like a phantom In the doubtful twilight’s interval With a whisper on the wind When the sanguine blade is shown From the clearing of the way To the forces from below Shadows reveal the king of kings Lead now always Tread the blazing Trail of stars that light the way Whispering On the wind Like a sanguine blade Stealing time away Shadows reveal the king of kings The king of kings The king of kings Arise from nowhere Of your own pure making Whispering On the wind Like a sanguine blade Steal time away

In cypress glades we cower Complicit in the night The tarnished force of Memnon Hindering the fight The hostile fields stand in our way Death and decay Are all around us A broken sword brings light to the day Scything away This endless nightmare This is the time to give thanks to the fallen This is the time to put everything right There is a place in our dreams we are calling On this fateful midsummer night A wanton celebration A furnace of desire Drops of rain are falling Extinguishing the fire A flower garland rests on the ground Stand in the round It serves to remind us A broken sword brings light to the day Scything away This endless nightmare This is the time to give thanks to the fallen This is the time to put everything right There is the place in our dreams we are calling On this fateful midsummer night Now we repent in the heart of the witchwood Facing the pressures of venerable life Under the spell of the moon and the spirits On this fateful midsummer night Midsummer night Farewell Farewell Tears and unforgetting Farewell Farewell To the cypress and rose sun setting Farewell

Standing on the mountain Quaking from the height Far below are the trees that grow In ashen light Clouds that gather Overhead Devastation that we fear and dread One more Outrage One more fallen friend Brought to earth with a fatal curse It never ends One more Failing One more fall from grace Mesmerised by cerulean skies So far away and Blinded by the light On and on We forge beyond The sacrifice of lustrous life Embarked upon In a dream By a sable stream When a bittern storm brings darkness like a death machine Visions unforeseen One last Embrace One last night with friends Swept away by the light of day Longing for The new found freedom of the end On and on We forge beyond The sacrifice of lustrous life Embarked upon In a dream By a sable stream When a bittern storm brings darkness like a death machine Visions unforeseen

When the night has fallen on the outside Flower demons haunt the flickering flames Dancing around in the cold of the cave Autumn colours painting troubling pictures in the haze In the splendour of decay As the weaving flowers play Back and forth And we fear for the light of day As the flowers fall away And the demons still remain Rejoicing in The plague of the darkest day This is the season This is a sign Unending silence calls And now we sleep ’til the end of time When the night has fallen on the outside Flower demons haunt the flickering flames Dancing around in the cold cave Autumn colours painting troubling pictures in the haze In the splendour of decay As the weaving flowers play Back and forth And we fear for the light of day

Trudging through the rain and snow In the grip of a winter’s day Looking for a warm safe place To hide away When a poor lost mother came to me With the news of her new born son Trying to find out if he is The chosen one Riding on the wings Of a wyvern on a solar wind In a place that lies above The wasteland we are living on Could this be the day When the darkness falls away The king of kings returns To end the disarray Wearing down, the elements Of a world in deep decay Sermonise and realise The only way To bring about the clearing out Of the sins that went before Simplify, say goodbye And close the door Riding on the wings Of a wyvern on a solar wind In a place that lies above The wasteland we are living on Could this be the day When the darkness falls away The king of kings returns To end the disarray Riding on the wings Of a wyvern on a solar wind In a place that lies above The wasteland we are living on Could this be the day When the darkness falls away The king of kings returns To end the disarray

Win or lose the final quest All pervading emptiness On the point of no return Wisdom that we had to learn Along the way In the days Of sanctuary Walking the riven worlds at sunset Glades of majesty Ruined in a travesty Fighting hard will set you free This is where we need to be Along the way In the days Of sanctuary Walking the riven worlds at sunset Here we go again In the darkest depths of winter Here we go again To the strains of ancient thunder Time and time again With the grace of falling flowers Sit me down again And now… Making sense Of the stolen years We flow With tears of mist and fire Time and time again We fail to breathe the air above Until now… Stay with me ’til the golden starlight shines across the sky Come with me To a resting place that only we can find In all its splendour Here we go again In the darkest depths of winter Here we go again To the strains of ancient thunder Time and time again With the grace of falling flowers Sit me down again And now… Stay with me ’til the golden starlight shines across the sky Come with me To a resting place that only we can find In all its splendour

about

A concept album concerning the characters and events of the fictional ‘Witchwood' - a woodland home under threat of destruction by an unseen tyrannical power. Summoning the ancient 'spirits of the Witchwood' for guidance, the woodland residents fight back against the destruction but ultimately lose.

The outline story can be interpreted as a metaphor for environmental and ecological issues of the modern age.

The title track took a long time to pull together but once completed, the other tracks were composed and recorded very quickly, all within four months. The music and lyrics are the work of Verulium. All vocals and harmonies are by Amanda. Amanda also contributed to the song arrangements.
